Old Time Radio Style Double Feature
The Horla and The Hitch-Hiker

The Horla
“The Horla” was adapted from a Guy de Maupassant short story for Mystery in the Air, a 1947 radio series of spine-tingling tales showcasing actor Peter Lorre in some of his most intense performances. In “The Horla,” Lorre played a Frenchman convinced he’s being stalked by a malevolent phantom. He fights back fiercely—and with fire!—but is he saving the world or sacrificing lives to his own personal demons? It’s up to listeners to decide if our protagonist has been has driven to madness by the invisible creature or if madness itself is the true menace.

The Hitch-Hiker
Few dramas make better use of radio’s penetrating powers of physiological persuasion than “The Hitch-Hiker,” by Louise Fletcher, one of old-time radio’s finest writers. Fletcher takes listeners on an increasingly surreal cross-county road trip in the company of Ronald Adams, who is dogged by a mysterious and seemingly unescapable hitchhiker. The stranger’s grim mission is revealed in a shocking denouement. Orson Welles played the lead role in broadcasts on three different radio series between 1941 and 1946, and the drama was adapted for a classic episode of the Twilight Zone aired in 1960.
