The Gift of the Magi
The Gift of the Magi
Synopsis: Sometimes sacrifice is the gift of love, according to the biblical Magi. On the eve of Christmas, a desperate woman named Della, with less than a dollar in her pocket, seeks out a gift for her husband, Jim. She decides to sell her beautiful long hair to the barber Madame Sofronie for enough money to buy a platinum pocket watch chain. On Christmas Day, Jim sees that Della has cut her hair. He gives her his gift, which is a set of ornamental combs, completely unusable now. Della explains that she sold her hair to buy him this gift, and hands him a gift. He opens it, sees the pocket watch chain and explains he sold his pocket watch to buy her the combs.
The Argument: Helen wrote the stage play adapted from O. Henry’s well-known short story. There’s no better way to celebrate the circle of life than performing and bringing to life the words of Helen Borgers.
