The Comedy of Errors

Synopsis: Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors begins with Egeon telling the story of how thirty-three years before, a monstrous storm separated members of his family, and that of his servant, Dromio, as well. And both servant and master have a set of identical twins. The boys who floated with Egeon took on the names of their lost twins, Antipholus of Syracuse, to travel the world with his slave, Dromio of Syracuse, trying to find his long-lost brother and mother and answers. Unknown to them, their twin brothers (with identical names) have been living there all these years after being rescued by some local fishermen. But their arrival in Ephesus cause a series of incidents with a courtesan, a nun and lots of mistaken identity. Egeon is arrested and is promptly sentenced to beheading. But first he tells his tragic and extraordinary tale to the Duke Solinus, who takes pity on the man and declares that Egeon has until sunset to try to raise 1,000 marks as a ransom or he must die, that is unless he finds someone in Ephesus that might help him in his search of his family. There is a countdown until sunset and miraculously, Egeon and both sets of twins end up in the same town on the same day for a reunion.

The Argument: The Comedy of Errors, shows us how far you will go to save your own neck, your long lost family and or your coin purse. The stakes are high in this Shakespearian comedy all about a family torn apart, lost for decades, left for dead, homeless, penniless, sentenced to death. But somehow someway through the grace and the humor of the gods the impossible happens and they find their way back to each other. It shows that even in the most painful loss there is always a chance that perseverance can be found.
